Training Manager Opportunity – Port of Brisbane

Poseidon Sea Pilots Pty Ltd (PSP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian Maritime Systems Group (AMSG), www.ams.group, is set to commence the next generation of pilotage operations in the Brisbane Pilotage Area from 1 January 2022.

PSP will provide on-demand quality pilotage services, using the most advanced best-in-practice, customer-focussed systems, supported by a team of industry specialists.

We are inviting applications from experienced marine pilots with the appropriate aptitude and skills to fill the newly created position of Training Manager. This is your opportunity to be part of a dynamic, progressive team of specialists and innovators and to join Australia’s most experienced pilotage management team.

Applicants will need to demonstrate those interpersonal skills required of the position as well as a long-standing passion for training marine pilots and a clear understanding of the future trajectory of marine pilot training. You will need a deep knowledge of emerging technologies and how these will be integrated into the pilotage profession in the future. You will also have an excellent understanding of the most modern training methodologies used in skilling those professionals who work in demanding and safety critical environments.

The Training Manager will have responsibility for delivery of PSP’s best-practice pilot training system which will go beyond, the requirements of federal and state legislation/regulation. The successful applicant must have a solid understanding of safety science and its application to the marine pilotage environment. The role will coordinate the various disciplines required for the modern marine pilotage task and a knowledge of the following will be essential:

  • Traditional pilot training methodologies
  • Proficiency-based training
  • Evidence-based training
  • Maximum situational awareness
  • PPU extension systemisation (training and endorsement)
  • Due diligence-based safety management

The Training Manager will head up the Poseidon Training Academy, working with professionals from the psychology, IT, engineering and systems design disciplines to ensure PSP remains a global leader in marine pilot training. The position will be responsible for integrating all of the facets of training (e.g. classroom, shipboard, simulator) with PSP’s Learning Management System (LMS) that will record initial, continuing and remedial training for all licensed pilots.
